Accessible Birding with Aliyah Hoff-Vanoni

  • Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden (map)

Spend a slow, joyful morning appreciating the diversity and abundance of birds at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. We will practice identifying birds by sight and sound, explore how the environment and species present change with the seasons, and share our curiosity and knowledge with each other.

Everyone is welcome to attend, including young birders joined by an attentive adult. You are especially encouraged to register if you are a beginner birder, if you are a member of a historically marginalized group (e.g., race and ethnicity, citizenship status, sexuality, gender), and/or you identify as disabled, chronically ill, or neurodivergent.

Aliya Hoff-Vanoni (she/they) is an artist, educator, and certified Oregon naturalist. They also lead accessible birding programs with Bird Alliance of Oregon and accessible tours of Hoyt Arboretum.

As someone who identifies as neurodivergent, disabled, and chronically ill, Aliya is committed to offering accessible nature education opportunities as a path for building self-confidence and fostering community and connection. When they are not learning or talking about plants and birds, you’ll find Aliya teaching sewing classes, experimenting with yet another new craft, or reading compulsively.

What to Expect

We will move at a gentle pace and stop frequently to look at and listen to birds. You may request a break at any time. Our route through the garden will be determined by the access needs of the group. You can find detailed accessibility information about Crystal Springs here. Please email Aliya with any questions and accommodation requests.

What to Wear

Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Birding involves moving slowly and staying still for extended periods of time, so you may feel colder than usual—dressing in layers is helpful. Wearing a hat with a brim will keep rain and sun out of your eyes and binoculars.

What to Bring

Please bring binoculars if you have them and anything you need to comfortably spend time outside. Mobility devices, sensory aids, adaptive/medical equipment, and water/snacks are encouraged.
