Guided Forest Therapy with Shawna Hartung

Step into a slower rhythm and experience the garden through your senses.

Forest bathing (inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku) is a gentle, guided experience that invites you to reconnect with the natural world and with yourself. During this two-hour walk, you’ll be guided through a series of simple sensory and relational invitations designed to help you:

  • Slow down and release mental clutter

  • Notice the beauty and detail of early spring

  • Experience the calming effects of nature on body and mind

  • Cultivate a sense of presence, connection, and ease

The experience includes a brief opening meditation, guided invitations to explore the landscape at your own pace, quiet personal reflection time (sit spot), and a closing tea gathering to “drink in” the morning together. This is not a hike or a naturalist walk—there is no distance to cover and no prior experience needed. All are welcome. Come as you are and move at your own pace.

Location: Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Portland OR

Date & Time: Saturday March 28th 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM

What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, and water.

About Your Guide

Shawna Hartung is a Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). Her approach is trauma-informed and grounded in creating psychologically safe, welcoming spaces where people can slow down, reconnect, and experience a sense of belonging with the more-than-human world. Shawna brings over 20 years of experience in environmental education, community programming, and nonprofit leadership. She is passionate about fostering meaningful connection—to nature, to community, and to ourselves—and believes time outdoors can support restoration, resilience, and well-being for people of all backgrounds.

Sliding Scale Equity Pricing

Birding for All (Neurodivergent, Family & Friends) with Rey Snyder, Bird Alliance

Birding with Rey

Our focus will be on birding by ear, getting acquainted with the unique songs and calls of our spring birds as well as their ID marks. The birds will ultimately decide our focus, however, and we will be flexible to what they have to offer. The pace will be slow and deliberate. We will make many stops and take time to ensure that everyone has a chance to see and/or hear the bird.

Beginners welcome!

  • Bring binoculars if you have them! If not, I’ll have a few extras to share. I’ll bring a scope as well.

  • Dress for the weather! Layers can be very helpful. A brimmed hat will help keep the sun out of your eyes and the rain off your binoculars.

About Rey Snyder

Rey (they/them) is an Autistic/ADHD birder and nature educator who was born and raised in Oregon. They are a co-leader of Portland’s Feminist Bird Club and serve on the board for the Oregon Birding Association. Rey leads trips and workshops for several organizations. They are committed to ethical birding, as well as to creating safe and inclusive spaces in the natural world for historically marginalized communities.

Cost is free - No admission required

Cash donations at entry will go directly to the group leader, Rey.

The Great Backyard Bird Count!

Join us for some self-guided citizen science!

February 13th-16th, the garden is a destination for the 2026 Great Backyard Bird Count, as a self guided, all ages activity in collaboration with the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. This citizen science project helps tracks bird population worldwide.

No need to sign up, however we do recommend downloading the Merlin Bird ID App or eBird on your phone and make sure to select our region to help match bird songs with accuracy. Merlin works for tracking your sightings, but eBird is preferred.

Both eBird and Merlin come highly recommended to anyone interested in learning more about birds, and both are free.

For more info, here is their website https://www.birdcount.org/participate/
